The entry and exit points of the Panaji and Mapusa bus stands have fallen into a poor state, worsened by heavy rains this monsoon, leaving motorists and commuters struggling with unsafe and waterlogged conditions.
The Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd (KTC), which manages the facilities, has come under fire for failing to carry out timely maintenance.
The All Goa Private Bus Owners’ Association said it had first written to KTC in April, followed by two reminders, requesting urgent repairs to the Panaji and Mapusa bus stands.
The association also sought permission to install timing watches at both locations for the convenience of private stage carriage operators.
“Nothing has been done till date and the bus operators as well as the general public are suffering very badly due to this inefficiency,” said Sudip Tamankar, General Secretary of the association.
He warned that unless the demands are met, private bus operators would be left with no option but to launch an agitation.
According to the association, the poor upkeep has also discouraged commuters and tourists from using public transport.
“The condition of the bus stands is driving people away from buses at a time when reliable public transport is needed most,” Tamankar said.
Responding to the criticism, KTC General Manager Mahendra Pednekar told The Goan that the government intends to take up “total renovation” of the Panaji, Mapusa and Margao bus stands.
“We are not keen to waste public money on temporary fixes. For the time being, we will carry out some patchwork only if the weather permits,” Pednekar said.
For now, with patchwork uncertain and the monsoon still active, daily commuters and bus operators continue to grapple with crumbling infrastructure at two of the State’s busiest transport hubs.
