PANAJI
Panaji police tasted first blood in its investigations into the bizarre theft case of last week at a wedding venue at Miramar’s Gaspar Dias Club when a team led by Police Sub-Inspector Remedious D’Souza nabbed one member of the gang involved in Gujarat on Monday.
The gang had used a child to lift a bag filled with gold ornaments said to be worth Rs 35 lakh from the Miramar wedding venue. The act was caught on the closed circuit TV cameras.
Police said the team arrested Madhya Pradesh native Sawant Sisodia (24) early Monday morning with assistance from their counterparts in Gujarat.
Sisodia, according to the police, is a member of a gang with a penchant for thefts at wedding venues. In 2017, this gang was busted in Delhi and said to be involved in over 100 such thefts from marriage venues in Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Police said, the gang had a signature modus operandi which was similar to the one adopted in the case at the Gaspar Dias Club in Miramar last week.
A minor boy executed the physical act of lifting the bag, but police suspect that identifying which bag had to be lifted and taking precautions to ensure that the act is not captured on the CCTV cameras were all executed by other senior associates.
Sisodia will be brought to the State by Tuesday, a police officer connected with the investigations said, adding that following his interrogation they are confident of recovering the stolen gold and nabbing all the others involved.
