The situation at the SGPDA’s wholesale fish market remains far from satisfactory, with the Taluka-level committee headed by the SDM, Margao, flagging the dumping of waste, primarily thermocol boxes and plastic, outside the market premises along the Margao–Seraulim road.

The panel further observed that the waste had been burnt at the site. It also noted that the wholesale fish market was yet to register as a bulk waste generator with the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) through the centralised online portal.

Pointing out lapses in waste management, the panel stated that the SGPDA was yet to make the necessary arrangements for the collection and handover of dry waste, sanitary waste and special-care waste to the local body. It further observed that the PDA was yet to put in place arrangements for the collection and processing of wet waste generated at the market.

Recommendations in respect of

the wholesale fish market

The panel has  recommended that the SGDPA should register the wholesale fish market as a bulk waste generator on priority.

“The SGPDA shall designate a common waste collection point for the storage of segregated waste. All the market waste from the premises shall be brought to the common point for onward disposal in consultation with the MMC’, the panel stated, adding that the waste dumped outside the market premises along the Seraulim road shall be cleared by the SGPDA.

While recommending the display of adequate sign boards prohibiting waste dumping at critical locations with working CCTV cameras to discourage waste dumping, the panel has recommended a penalty of Rs 50,000 for burning of the waste and additional penalty of Rs 25,000 for inadequate management of solid waste from its premises under the provisions of the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage Act.
