A portion of the false ceiling collapsed at the electricity department office in Mapusa.

The incident came to light on Monday and it is believed that the portion of the false ceiling collapsed on Saturday or Sunday when the office was closed, thereby preventing any injuries to staff.

A computer printer was, however, damaged in the process.

The building is about 40 years old and has become weak, with incidents of portions of concrete collapsing being reported for the past few years. The weakened ceiling has been cause of serious concern among staff in the office.

When contacted, Executive Engineer Subhash Parsekar confirmed that a portion of the false ceiling had collapsed a few days ago.

“We have been trying to vacate this building for the last 6 months. We are looking for a place. Two places are being considered. One is the BSNL building and the other is the new building of the municipal council. The process is ongoing at both places. BSNL has quoted 250% more rent,” said Parsekar.

“The electricity department is constructing a three-storey building on its own land at the Housing Board. This place will have all facilities and a parking arrangement for over 140 cars. Work on this building will be completed in 2-3 three years. Until then, an alternative site is being sought.”
