Former Congress Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has said what comment he can offer on the emerging political developments when the Leader of the Opposition Babu Kavlekar himself is leading the 10-member group of Congress MLAs.
Kamat, however, said the party leadership in Delhi should introspect why the party is hit by desertions when the people of Goa have been rooting for the Congress party. The former Chief Minister, who was under the scanner of political circles over reports doing the rounds in the past several months that he has established contacts with top BJP leaders to join the saffron party, told The Goan that he has nothing to comment when the Leader of the Opposition has led the 10-member group into the BIP. “What should I say on the development. The Leader of the Opposition had chaired the meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting a day ago. And, today, Babu along with nine other MLAs have moved out of
the Congress to merge into the BJP,” he said.
Kamat pointed out that Babu Kavlekar was rewarded by the party by making him
the Leader of the Opposition by the Congress party. “Babu’s wife Savitri was accommodated last time round by giving her the ticket to contest from Sanguem. She was also made the district mahila chief”, he said, while saying he do not think that Babu was not accommodated by the party which has made him to leave the party.
The former Chief Minister, however, said the party leadership should seriously introspect what has gone wrong with the party that has made the MLAs to cross sides. “I think the party leadership should seriously introspect why MLAs are leaving the party”, he said.
Incidentally, Kamat was supported by the majority of the party MLAs to take over the GPCC reigns with the hope that he would get the Congress back to power in the state, but the high command preferred to settle for Girish Chodankar.
