Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira on Friday conceded that the courts are getting proactive when authorities such as the Pollution Control Board may have been sleeping to some extent.
He, however, asserted that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) needs to be given a chance to put its act together and attend to the issues.
The Minister made the remark after the media drew attention of waste burning being resorted in the jurisdiction of Margao Municipal Council and the sustained battle waged by the villages of Cuncolim against industrial pollution.
When his attention was pointed out to the industrial pollution at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, Sequeira said, “I think something has happened in Cuncolim. Some action has been taken by the Board as far as Cuncolim is concerned.
To the burning question of waste burning, Sequeira said he does not blame the people for disposal of waste via burning, saying villagers per se have no proper garbage disposal facilities in the villages.
“Some villages have now started waste collection drives. I think within a period of time, things will fall in place and be brought under control,” he added.
