Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai has said that people are always supreme. As per the constitution of India, people are supreme and taking this into account Raj Bhavan has decided to visit all panchayat areas in the state he said.
The Governor on Tuesday visited Marcaim and Shiroda in Ponda as a part of his “Sampurna Goa Yatra”.
Stressing on the 'Gram Swaraj' concept of Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhiji, the Governor stated that it was Gandhiji's idea of a self-reliant village, which was a unique concept of rural reconstruction. He said this was much before India's independence that Gandhiji developed over a period of time. His concept of 'Gram Swaraj' is considered one of the alternative models of rural reconstruction, whose primary focus was on the holistic development of a society the Governor added.
The Governor offered prayers and took the blessings of Shree Navdurga Deity at Marcaim. Minister for Power Ramkrishna Dhavalikar and Minister for Fisheries, Nilkanth Halarnkar accompanied the Governor during the visit.
The Governor was received by Shailendra Panjikar, Chairman of Shree Devi Navdurga Pratishthan Trust.
Later, the Governor visited the Marine Farming Site at Askanwada, Marcaim and acquainted himself with the process of mussels harvesting adopted by Goa University under the Directorate of Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan. He discussed in detail the process of mussel cultivation with local beneficiaries.
Thereafter, the Governor visited village panchayat Madkai and interacted with the Sarpanch, Deputy Sarpanch and Members of village panchayats of Durbhat, Wadi-Talaulim, Madkai and Kundaim.
Laxmi Tari Volvoikar, Sarpanch, Marcaim, Vishwas Fadte, Sarpanch, Kundaim, Dinesh Gaonkar, Sarpanch, Wadi-Talaulim and Saloni Gaude, Dy Sarpanch, Bandora presented a brief report of their respective villages.
Harilal Menon, Vice-Chancellor, Nadkarni, Registrar of Goa University graced the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion Ramkrishna Dhavlikar appealed to the self-help groups, farmers group and other allied associations to cultivate mussel or allied farming activities. He also expressed the need to take care of the endangered crops in Goa and mentioned the declining species of Karel Mango in the Marcaim area.
Addressing the gathering Nilkanth Halarnkar said, Goa is endowed with scenic beauty and blessed with beautiful nature. He urged to take the benefits of natural resources and appealed to the local farmers to come forward and make maximum use of natural resources.
Citing the motto behind organising 'Sampurna Goa Yatra', the governor said he intends to study the village life and life of the people from remote areas. He said he wants to pen a special book on Goa. He also said village life is far better than towns in the state.
