Books, documents, furniture and electrical fittings at the government primary school at Bhirone-Pernem have been soaked by rainwater as the roof which was opened for renovation work had not been closed as rains lashed Pernem taluka over the last many days.

The roof had been opened for renovation work and the sand which had been brought to the site also got washed away by the rainwater.

Pernem’s Mission for Local member Rajan Korgaonkar and some members visited the school and expressed shock to find the roof completely open.

“It has been raining heavily for the last 8-10 days and it is a good thing that the government has taken up the repair work of these primary schools. But care should have been taken while doing the renovation work. Many documents at the school have been soaked in the rainwater,” said Korgaonkar.

“Authorities should take action against the contractor and ensure that the situation is rectified before children returned to school in June. If the roof continues to be open during the rains, can parents send their children to the school?”

Korgaonkar later met the ADEI at Pernem to enquire into the matter and he was told that if the work is not completed before schools reopen, the classes will be conducted elsewhere.
