SANGUEM
With Sanguem likely to be reserved for an ST candidate, speculation is growing over whether Sanguem MLA and Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai could shift to neighbouring Curchorem for the next Assembly elections.
The speculation gained traction after Phal Dessai visited Curchorem, where he offered prayers at local temples and interacted with residents.
Phal Dessai said Curchorem was not new to him, as his relatives and maternal home are there and he was born and educated in the area.
However, he said any decision on his political future would be taken only after consultations with party leaders and senior representatives.
Phal Dessai maintained that his temple visits in Curchorem were regular and not linked to the elections. He said he visits local temples at least once a month and has a longstanding spiritual and personal connection with the area. “I had sought the blessings of God so that I could strengthen my connect with the people and work for their welfare,” he said.
During his recent visit, several residents met him and expressed confidence in his leadership while stressing the need for strong leadership in the constituency, he said.
Recalling his political association with Curchorem, Phal Dessai said he had contested from the constituency in 1994. He said certain developments shortly before the filing of nominations had prompted him to change his political course at the time.
