Despite being a person with physical disability facing challenges at every step, Rohan Ramesh Harmalkar from Mandrem always remained determined to achieve his goals, pursue education and build a meaningful life. “I view the world as a constantly evolving place where every experience provides an opportunity for growth. Life is full of challenges, but it is also full of possibilities. I believe in the importance of kindness, understanding, and balance. Others may see me as driven, thoughtful, and passionate about my goals, and I strive to approach life with optimism and an open mind,” says the 27-year-old.
Recalling his educational journey as unique, Rohan adds, “Life threw challenges at me, particularly, in accessing education. I was unable to attend regular schools due to the lack of support and understanding of my needs. This delayed my education and made me start school at an older age. Local Marathi schools refused to admit me, so my schooling began at a special school, providing me with foundational education and a supportive environment. Later, I transitioned to the open school system to pursue higher education, completing 12th Standard through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) under the Delhi Board. Currently, I am pursuing graduation in commerce through IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University). My schooling started late but that did not dampen my spirits. Through the open school system, I passed my 10th exam at the age of 23, followed by my 12th exam. Currently, I am completing my graduation,” discloses Rohan.
“Despite these obstacles, my disability has shaped me into a resilient individual, teaching me to be patient, persistent, and creative in finding solutions to the challenges I face,” admits Rohan who enjoys extracurricular activities. Singing has been a big part of his life, and he takes pride in his ability to sing and share his passion for music with others. He also enjoys playing chess. Additionally, he has a creative side and enjoys video editing, which allows him to express in new and exciting ways. “I believe in a higher power that guides us through life, whether that is God, the universe, or nature. I trust that there is a greater force at work, encouraging us to live with purpose, kindness, and compassion,” he points out.
One of the key lessons Rohan has learned throughout his life is to never give up. “I made a conscious decision to push through my struggles, work hard, and achieve something meaningful. I want to prove to the world that people with disabilities can accomplish the same things as others. By passing my 10th and 12th Standard exams and pursuing my graduation, I have made great strides in proving this belief,” says Rohan who has been fortunate to receive financial assistance through government schemes such as DSSS and other scholarships.
Rohan admits that his motivation comes from people with disabilities around the world who continue to fight for their rights and never give up. Life can be challenging, but he believes that the strength to keep going comes from within. “For me, that force is the resilience of the PwDs and the belief that we can overcome anything with determination,” he asserts.
Rohan is not financially independent at this stage but has a strong support system. “My family has always been my pillar of strength, providing me with love, encouragement, and opportunities. They have ensured that I have access to the same opportunities as others. Friends have also been incredibly supportive, treating me with inclusivity and acceptance. Additionally, my teachers have been instrumental in breaking down the learning barriers I faced, teaching me perseverance and pushing me to reach my full potential,” agrees Rohan.
Society needs to embrace and support PwDs, he feels, “They should be treated with love, care, respect, and equality. They deserve the same dignity and opportunities as everyone else. It’s important to support and uplift individuals with disabilities and avoid speaking negative about them. Let’s create an inclusive society where everyone is valued and empowered, regardless of their abilities.”
Rohan dreams to complete his graduation and pursue a successful career, whether in business or a job. He is determined to keep working toward his goals and translate his dreams into reality. Underlining that more needs to be done to support the disabled community, he suggests creating homes for people with disabilities, like old age homes or orphanages to provide a safe, supportive environment.
Technology has played an important role in living a more independent and fulfilling life. Assistive devices, online education, and communication tools have made it easier for him to overcome many of the challenges he faces. “Being disabled has certainly presented its challenges, but it has also shaped me into the person I am today “ someone passionate about making a difference. Embrace your own potential, no matter what obstacles you may face. And let us all work towards creating a more inclusive world where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can achieve their dreams,” expresses Rohan.
