Expressing anger over pollution levels from some factories operating at the Pissurlem Industrial Estate (PIE), residents of Pissurlem have demanded action against those involved in the high pollution levels or moving the court to shut down these units.
These concerns were raised by residents at a recent meeting, chaired by Pissurlem Sarpanch Jayshree Gawade in the village.
Others present on the occasion included Deputy Sarpanch Suresh Gawade, Panchas Devanand Parab, Sangeeta Mote, laximan Gawade, Rohidas Gaonkar and panchayat secretary Devu Mainkar.
Former sarpanch Deepaji Rane raised the issue about increasing pollution from one unit operating at the PIE since the last one year and questioned the panchayat for failing to take action against such units.
He claimed that such pollution would be harmful to the health of residents from Pissurle, Bhuipal and surrounding villages.
Responding to these concerns, Sarpanch Jayshree Gawade said the panchayat was mindful to the pollution levels of the unit in question and added that the panchayat had repeatedly notified the concerned authorities about the issue. She expressed displeasure that no action had taken place in the matter.
Gawade also assured the residents that the panchayat would submit a formal complaint regarding pollution at the PIE to the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and if needed, would also file a petition in court to seek a closure of those units responsible for pollution in the area.
The sarpanch also briefed residents on development work in Pissurlem and assured that other development projects would be commissioned in future.
Panch Devanand Parab appealed to residents to support the Panchayat to undertake various development works in the village. Deputy Sarpanch Sudhir Gawade and Panchayat Secretary Devu Mainkar also spoke at the meeting.
