Calangute Police arrested three persons on charges of exchanging old currency notes for new ones and seized new currency worth Rs 24 lakh at Gaurawaddo-Calangute on Wednesday.
According to Calangute PI Jivba Dalvi, the accused, a pygmy agent, Shyamsunder Palyekar (42) from Khorlim, a computer salesman and technician Sushant Volvoikar (30) from Borim-Ponda and a matka bookie Kishan alias Eshan Korgaonkar (30) were caught red-handed with new currency notes of Rs 2,000, amounting to Rs 24 lakh.
The police said the accused used to exchange old notes for a commission of 20-40 per cent.
The police have also seized a Swift Dzire car (GA-05-T-3963) and three mobile phones from the accused.
The police further informed that acting on information from a source that the racket of exchanging currency was underway in Calangute, the police posing as customers called the accused and informed them to meet them near a hotel at Gaurawaddo-Calangute on Tuesday night.
“Accordingly, a police team led by PI Jivba Dalvi and PSI Mahesh Gadekar rushed to the site and caught the accused red-handed with new currency notes,” informed the police.
The accused and the seized amount will be handed over to the Income Tax department. Further investigation is in progress.
