It was 5.30 pm on Sunday. Even as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane took to social media to ring in the good news that Covid cases in Goa were zero, a police convoy quietly entered the Pajifond area of Fatorda to do what the men-in-uniform have been doing all along these days “ educating people on the virus and pleading them to stay safely indoors.
Moments later, cops led by district police chief, SP Arvind Gawas, on the government quarters to spread the message through songs. They also went to the adjoining housing colony, conveying the message loud and clear that the Covid battle is far from over.
As usual, DySP, Konkan railway police station, Sammy Tavares, PSI Diego Gracias, Lady PSI Swapna Gawas and police official Bhakti belted out a couple of songs, especially composed on coronavirus, to drive home the message, evoking a thunderous applause from those gathered round.
Sub-divisional Police Officer, Margao, DySP Serafino Dias, was clear in informing the people that the ongoing lockdown will continue till May 3, making a fervent plea to observe social distancing and follow the guidelines set by the authorities.
DySP Serafino appealed to those quarantined at home to stay indoors and follow the instructions of the authorities. While asking the businessmen not to terminate the labourers, he promised that the authorities will arrange shelter for them. “Please observe the guidelines to stay away from coronavirus. Goa police are ready to serve you. We want your cooperation,” he added.
The police also made a special request to the parents to ensure that their wards stay inside, reminding that lockdown is not a holiday, but a measure to deal with the deadly virus.
Pajifond ward councillor Angeles Pereira appealed to the people to observe social distancing, while former MLA Damu Naik requested the residents to cooperate with the police and other authorities.
Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Pooja Naik and Usha Sardesai also came to show their solidarity with the people in the battle against coronavirus.
