Porvorim police stopped fishing activity by some people using nets at the Sao Paul Catra manas in Salai, Salvador do Mundo.
Some farmers noticed fishing activity using nets at the Sao Paul Catra at Salai and alerted the Bardez Mamlatdar, who in turn, notified the Porvorim police and asked them to stop the fishing activity.
A police team rushed to the spot and stopped the fishing activity, besides directing the farmers gathered at the site to remove the net tied to the doors of the manas.
When contacted, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the Sao Paul Catra manas has not been auctioned as yet and hence, no one had the right to carry out fishing activity at the manas.
“As per law, the auction of every manas has to take place on December 15. This year, the auction of this manas has not taken place. Despite this, some people are illegally carrying out fishing activity at the manas with the connivance of authorities.”
“It is the Mamlatdar’s duty to keep vigil on the manas and ensure that fishing activities are not carried out at the manas which is not auctioned,” said Khaunte.
The Porvorim MLA said the Mamlatdar should only auction the manas which is repaired and fit to operate.
“If saline water enters the fields, then agricultural crops are not only damaged but the soil is also affected and farmers cannot cultivate the land for the next 2-3 years,” said Khaunte.
