Some bus stops in the port town have been plastered with saffron advertisements, prompting the Congress to turn red with anger.
The bus stops at Sada and the Mangor junction have been covered with BJP campaign material and GPCC Vice President and Mormugao Congress leader Sankalp Amonkar has accused the government machinery and flying squad of overlooking violations in the model code of conduct.
“While the model code of conduct is implemented in the entire state, large BJP advertisements have come up in public places and bus stops. No one can advertise party symbol during the code of conduct, but the BJP has managed to have such large advertisements with the party symbol, PM Narendra Modi’s photo and message.”
Amonkar said the flying squad had even visited his office.
“They directed me to cover up the ‘hand’ symbol, ‘vote for Congress’ message etc. which was inside my office and we did so accordingly. However, it is a surprise that they have not seen such large hoardings with BJP messages on bus stops across Vasco,” said Amonkar.
“Who has given the BJP the permission to advertise and what is the government machinery, dy collector, flying squad and election commission doing about this?,” he questioned.
“Being a Saturday, this is a deliberate attempt so that they can relax till Monday when the government offices open. I demand immediate action on these violations,” said Amonkar.
When contacted, a BJP leader was surprised to see the advertisements pasted on the bus stops in Vasco and insisted that the BJP was not involved in pasting those advertisements.
“Let the opposition raise the issue and file complaints with the returning officer, flying squad or the election commission. We should not be held responsible for something we have not done,”
said the leader.
