Addressing a news conference, MTAPT President Baban Sawant said they have been doing the business with sincerity, but claimed that some were levelling allegations to malign the image of Goan taxi drivers.
“It is a ploy to malign us and give a backdoor entry to Uber and Ola cab services,” said Sawant.
“It is wrong to hold everyone responsible if someone makes a mistake. If someone charges more than the given rate, then the customer concerned should complain to authorities instead of blaming all taxi operators.”
Sawant said that many families in Goa are dependent on the taxi business and feared that the entry of Uber and Ola cab services would affect their business.
Sawant also said that they were ready to install fare metres, provided that action is taken against private vehicles who operate illegally without paying any fees.
Chiranjiv Rao, Santosh Kerkar, Sudhakar Naik, Sainath Desai and other members of MTAPT were also present on the occasion.
