The minister was speaking during Revolution day programme at Kranti Maidan Ponda.
Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) chairperson Dr Radhika Nayak, Additional Collector Damodar Morajkar, Deputy Collector Navatha Naik, freedom fighter and former MLA Rohidas Naik and others were present on the occasion.
“Portuguese ruled here from 1510 to 1961. During this period, they harassed Goans so much and we should not show mercy to them,” Dhavalikar said.
He said Dr Ram Manohar Lohia played a vital role to liberate Goa by spreading awareness among the people. “He didn’t get afraid to the threats of the Portuguese. He addressed the people at Lohia Maidan Margao and awakened them,” the PWD minister said.
“We should always remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters for Goa’s liberation, which is why we decided to beautify Kranti Maidan, and the names of freedom fighters will be displayed here,” added Dhavalikar.
Freedom fighter Rohidas Naik recalled the days of liberation movement and narrated the incidents.
“Many freedom fighters sacrificed for this struggle and we should always remember them,” he added.
He appealed to the people of Ponda taluka to support development works.
“Sewerage system is important and we should not oppose it,” he said.
