PORVORIM

Tension flared up at Porvorim on Tuesday when local BJP block members collected roadside garbage and allegedly dumped it near a supermarket.

A furious Penha de Franca panchayat later picked up the garbage from the site and denounced the BJP block for its unwarranted action.

According to reports, members of Porvorim BJP mandal assembled near Maruti temple at Porvorim on Tuesday morning and started collecting garbage scattered alongside the roadside. State BJP President Sadanand Tanavade was also involved in the activity, which lasted for about an hour.

Porvorim BJP Mandal President Kunda Chodankar, Kishor Asnodkar and others said they had conducted the drive to collect plastic from Porvorim.

However, instead of disposing of the garbage bags, the BJP workers left the garbage outside a supermarket and went away.

Locals in the area were agitated on seeing the garbage bags near the supermarket and alerted the Penha de Franca panchayat.

Panchayat members went to the site and denounced the action of the BJP block as unwarranted.

“The panchayat is collecting door-to-door garbage on a daily basis and also collects roadside garbage. There was no need for the Porvorim BJP Mandal to create this farce of collecting garbage,” said a furious Sarpanch Gurunath Vernekar.

“Moreover, the garbage collected hardly contains plastic but they informed the media that they had collected plastic. After collecting garbage, they shared photos on social/print media, then disappeared from the site, leaving the garbage bags on the footpath near Kavlekar supermarket. Their action is highly condemnable,” said Vernekar.

ZP member Gupesh Naik also criticised the Porvorim BJP Mandal and said, “the BJP is not interested in creative work but their karyakartas want cheap publicity only.”

“This is nothing but a farce to show they are interested in cleanliness of Porvorim.”
