Demanding stringent punishment, activist Tara Kerkar has demanded that the accused who raped a minor girl, due to which she attempted to commit suicide, should be probed further for many such crimes against women. Kerkar made the statement while speaking to the reporters outside the GMC, Bambolim on Sunday.
“I have doubts that the accused may have committed more such crimes against women. The police should find out how many more crimes the accused has committed as his wife is not there with him,” Kerkar informed.
“I have told the minor to be brave and that she has been saved by God to punish the accused who may be a habitual offender against women,” she informed while demanding strictest of punishment against the accused.
“The family wants that the accused be hanged to death and I also demand the same,” Kerkar demanded while at the same time lamenting the legal system of the country which does not allow such punishment.
Kerkar also lambasted the chief minister for failing to ensure safety of women.
Speaking on the condition of the minor victim girls, Kerkar said, “The girl has fractured legs and has backbone problem, which could require operation. She is the lone child of the parents and all treatment possible should be provided to her.”
Another activist Cecille Rodrigues said that the girl is scared as she has no one to back her, not even the government.
“The CM has not said anything about the incident as he is least bothered. When we don’t have a strict government, who is going to take strict action?” Rodrigues questioned and informed that it is time for citizens to be active when they come across crime against women.
“Be strong and come forward when things like rape, molestation, harassment happens. Don’t get scared to report,” Rodrigues advised.
“Women should also understand that when something happens to them it is not their fault. It is the system and the mindset that is corrupt due to which women are being attacked,” she opined and chided the two women MLAs for failing to raise issues concerning women in the Assembly.
“The women are living in fear all the time as we do not even know whether we will return home safely,” she further added.
