Admitting that garbage management has been one of the biggest challenges confronting the State government, Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte on Saturday said the issue could not be solved without the support and cooperation of public.
He was speaking at the programme organised by the State government and Goa State Biodiversity Board in association with Ministry of Environment, Forest and climate change and National Biodiversity Board to celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity at Salvador-do-Mundo.
“Most panchayats collecting garbage on door-to-door basis have been advising the public to segregate garbage and deliver it to the panchaya but many residents do no bother to segregate garbage at their homes, thereby creating problems for panchayats.”
“If residents ensure that wet and dry garbage is segregated at home and surrounding of their houses are kept clean, the problem of garbage will be solved automatically,” said Khaunte.
The minister suggested that the State government should prepare a list of its priorities and then act upon them.
He, however, insisted that the State government alone could not achieve this objective and said cooperation of all stakeholders and the public was vital in this connection.
On the occasion, the minister felicitated Dr Nandakumar Kamat and the Surla panchayat Biodiversity Managment Committee from North Goa and Kamlakar Sadhle and Curtorim Panchayat Biodiversity Management Committee from South Goa, who were conferred with Biodiversity Conservation Awards 2018-19.
A documentary of biodiversity and a brochure were released by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Subhash Chandra.
The event was supported by Fomento Media’s Social Initiative “ Green Army Edition IV and by The Goan, Goan Varta, Bhangar Bhuim and Prudent Media. Khaunte later inaugurated an exhibition of fruits and allied products.
