Welcoming the state government's action of suspending ITI instructor Roque Coelho over students allegations, the Goa Government ITI Employees Association (GGIEA) has said the guilty should be punished but also wants the innocent to be reinstated.
Addressing a news conference at the ITI Farmagudi, GGIEA President Anil Bhosle on Saturday appealed to the student community to inform them if such incidents takes place, so that they can be brought to the government's notice.
GGIEA general secretary Siddhesh Asolkar, senior vice president Rajendra Siddarkar, finance secretary Vinod Chimulkar and secretary protocol Nagesh Tari were present on the occasion.
It may be recalled that Vocational Instructor (Practical) Roque Coelho was suspended in connection with allegations of extortion, harassment and abuse, after the student community had protested against him. About 50 trainees from the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Farmagudi had boycotted classes on Monday to demand action against Coelho, after alleging that he had extorted money and had harassed them.
Following his suspension, the Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (DSD&E) had placed the Group Instructor Vishnu Naik at the of ITI-Farmagudi and Principal S S Gaonkar under suspension. Gaonkar has been placed under suspension on charges of keeping the department in dark on the issue of harassment to students.
"Such actions by instructors are unacceptable. This (harassment to student) should not have happened. We are not ‘Kasai' (butcher) or ‘dalal' to harass and extort money. We are teachers. We have to impart good education, cultural values in students. Besides this, we should mould them and guide," Bhosle said.
"It was good that after a protest by students, the government took prompt decision and action. In this case, a neutral investigation should take place. Those who are guilty should be punished and innocent be reinstated," Bhosle added.
Bhosle has appealed to the ITI teaching fraternity not not take law into their hands, but to act as parents of students when they are in educational institutions.
