The PWD sewerage department came under scrutiny of agitated residents of Madel, Fatorda, as locals accused department officials of discharging raw sewage into the stormwater drains.

In fact, a criminal complaint was lodged with the Fatorda Police against the Sewerage Department for failing to maintain the Maddel sewer system and for neglecting to repair the faulty sewer line for the past two months, thereby causing health hazards and public nuisance. The complaint alleges that raw sewage waste and wastewater have been released into the adjoining nullah despite several public complaints and objections.

Resident Savio Dias enclosed photographs with the complaint, illustrating the health hazards and public nuisance caused by the Sewerage Department (PWD) to the residents. In his complaint, Dias requested the police to register an FIR against the Sewerage Department for its lethargy and negligence in protecting the public interest and for polluting the River Sal, the lifeline of Salcete.

“This grave issue has been brought to their notice several times, but the Department has failed to repair the sewer line and alleviate our hardships,” the complaint stated, urging the police to conduct a site panchnama and register an FIR against the negligent department.
