After endless delays, work on the two-lane first phase Rawanfond Bridge under construction is finally expected to be completed before March 1.

After conducting an inspection of the bridge work along with senior officials, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat said work on the two-lane bridge is finally nearing to an end. Work on the balance two-lane bridge will be taken up only after the commissioning of the two-lane bridge after razing down the decade-old existing bridge.

He said officials of various agencies have informed that the work on the two-lane bridge will end before March 1. Kamat said work on the four-lane Rawanfond Bridge was taken up in phases to ensure that the work does not hamper the movement of vehicular traffic. “When the first two-lane bridge is thrown open for traffic, work on the phase-II two-lane bridge will commence after the demolition of the existing bridge,” he said.

To a question on the Arlem flyover, the PWD Minister said the Goa government has proposed to the Union Ministry for Surface and Road Transport to extend the Arlem flyover and connect the same to the Rawanfond Bridge for smooth flow of traffic. “As per the plan, the Arlem flyover is scheduled to land somewhere near the Maruti Temple. But, we have proposed to the Centre to extend the flyover right up to the Rawanfond Bridge taking into account the future requirements along the eastern bypass,” he said.

The PWD Minister has also mooted a proposal to connect the Margao city to the western bypass road near the Vidya Vikas Mandal educational complex. Once completed, the road link from Vidya Vikas Mandal to the western bypass is expected to decongest the city around the Khareband-Comba area, prone to acute traffic congestion when the railway crossing is close for traffic.
