Amidst challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) on the busy roads, the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities on Friday launched an ambitious project to make several establishments, hotels, and showrooms in the capital city accessible for PwDs.
State Commissioner for PwDs Guruprasad Pawaskar stated that the Corporation of the City of Panaji has been collaborating with the Office of the State Commissioner for PwDs to ensure easy access to different footpaths that lead to shops and establishments.
The ongoing project, in association with Ramp My City and Enable India, will also ensure the ramps are not obstructed or destroyed by way of haphazard parking by two-wheelers or four-wheelers.
In view of such incidents, Pawaskar sought to create awareness among the commuters with instructions to follow designated accessible spaces for the benefit of all persons.
“The process of change will take time, and the International Purple Fest serves as a means to raise public awareness, promoting inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with disabilities. In the ongoing Smart City project, there’s a focused effort to ensure thorough consideration for accessibility,” he added.
He also mentioned that this year, the Legislative Assembly at Porvorim was made accessible to PwDs, and several government buildings are actively installing ramps and adapting to become more disability-friendly for better accessibility.
“The Office of the State Commissioner for PwDs is at the forefront, driving efforts for maximum accessibility through State government initiatives and the invaluable support of CSR partners,” Pawaskar further said.
