MARGAO
A resident of Avevdem-Quepem has complained of a loss of Rs 2.26 lakh after an unknown accused person gained unauthorised access to his banking and credit card accounts.
In his complaint, Clim Fernandes said that an unknown accused person called him on his mobile phone. Offering him a free credit card, the accused further sent a WhatsApp link and induced the complainant to download and install an APK file, and instructed the complainant to share his mobile screen and upload copies of his personal documents.
Believing the representation to be genuine, the complainant complied with the instructions, and after opening the APK file, OTPs were generated without his knowledge, allowing the accused to gain unauthorised access to his banking and credit card accounts.
Police said the accused dishonestly carried out unauthorised transactions from the complainant's account, thereby causing a total loss of Rs 2,26,123.04.
The Margao police are investigating.
