A month into the new fishing season and the Directorate of Fisheries will have to answer the same old question “ have adequate sanitation amenities been put in place at the Cutbona fishing jetty to cater to the requirements of thousands of migrant workers?
A lone toilet block manned by Sulabh International has been in place at the fisheries complex at Cutbona. The fisheries department may claim that that couple of bio-toilets have been set up at the complex in addition to the Sulabh toilet block.
What about the 50-seater toilet block proposed at the Cutbona Fishing jetty over a decade ago? Why has the proposal not seen light of the day till date when the fishing industry is totally dependent on the migrant workforce? And, whether the government can achieve the much talked about rejuvenation of the River Sal sans making adequate provision for sanitation at the Cutbona fishing jetty?
Velim Sarpanch Veena Cardozo on Sunday made an impassioned plea to the government to provide adequate sanitation amenities at the Cutbona jetty for the migrant workers. In the absence of sanitation facilities, the Velim Sarpanch claimed that the migrant workers are answering nature’s call in the adjoining fields, close to the residential locality, posing a nuisance and a health hazard.
