A fire broke out on Sunday morning in a cashew plantation owned by Sunandabai Rane near Shri Ram Temple at Khadki in the Khotoda Panchayat area, causing damage estimated at around Rs 60,000. However, the quick response of the Valpoi Fire Brigade helped save property worth nearly Rs 1.5 lakh. Local residents also played a key role in controlling the blaze and preventing a major mishap.

According to available information, the fire started suddenly in the plantation near Shri Ram Temple. Villagers rushed to the spot and tried to control the flames, but were unable to contain the fire. The Valpoi Fire Brigade was then informed.

After receiving the emergency call at around 10 am, a team led by Station Officer Dnyaneshwar G. Gawas reached the spot. The team included Prasad P. Naik (DOPT), Umesh R. Gavankar (Fire Fighter), Aditya L. Gawas (Fire Fighter), and Rupesh L. Mouskar (Fire Fighter).

The fire personnel used “Natural Fire Beaters” and battled the blaze for nearly one-and-a-half hours before bringing it under control. The fire caused losses estimated at Rs 60,000, while property worth around Rs 1.5 lakh was saved.

Sources said the presence of large amounts of dry grass in the area caused the fire to spread quickly. Though the exact cause is still unknown, it is suspected that a discarded cigarette may have sparked the blaze.

Local residents also extended valuable support to the fire brigade during the operation. Their timely assistance helped contain the fire quickly.

Officials said the strong morning winds could otherwise have worsened the situation. The alertness and cooperation of the locals helped prevent a major disaster.
