The Department of Environment has extended the time limit by 15 days for the filing of objections and suggestions for the draft notification proposing to notify the Bacbhatt lake and Bebki lake in Raia village as wetlands.
The extension of time by the Director of the environment department assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of Raia villagers vehemently opposing at the village gram sabha the draft notification notify Bebki and Bacbhatt lakes as wetlands.
An order signed by the Director, Department of Environment, Dr Sneha Gitte stated that any person interested in making any objection or suggestions on the proposals contained in the draft notification may forward the same in writing, for consideration of the Government of Goa within the period so specified to the Member Secretary, Goa State Biodiversity Board, Head of Nodal Agency, Goa State Wetland Authority, or at the email address [email protected].
The proposal to declare the two lakes in Raia village had turned controversial after people inhabiting around the Bebki lake and the Bacbhatt lake came out strongly to oppose the proposal to notify these water bodies as wetlands.
