Alert villagers of Raia on Thursday caught red-handed a vehicle laden with waste while it was in the process of unloading the waste in the village.
After the villagers raised an alarm, they called the local sarpanch Esmeralda Gomes as the occupier of the vehicle maintained that he has brought the waste from a resort in Cavelossim.
The villagers not only made the driver load the waste into the vehicle, but was levied a fine of Rs 5,000 by the sarpanch.
Deputy Sarpanch Mario D’Souza said the panchayat has imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the vehicle owner to act as a deterrent on unscrupulous garbage contractors from dumping waste in the village.
