Photo-journalist Rajtilak Naik was on Saturday elected the president of the Goa Union of Journalists for the 2019-20 two-year term.
Rajtilak Naik, who is chief photographer with the Times of India, secured 160 votes while his challenger Vasant alias Jayant Katkar secured 43 votes.
A total of 205 of the 304 members eligible to vote turned up for the polling held by ballot between 9 am and 1 pm recording a voting percentage of 67.43%. Two votes were declared invalid by the Returning Officer Pandurang Gaonkar.
Gaonkar also declared 10 members electeded to the executive committee as follows: Vasudev Pagi (156 votes), Sagun Gawade (151 votes), Ganesh Shetkar (126 votes), Glenn Costa (126 votes), Kanzil Rodrigues (112 votes), Kailas Naik (102 votes), Audumer Shinde (101 votes), Pramod Thakur (99 votes), Tulsidas N Raul (98 votes) and Suraj A Nandrekar (93 votes).
Both Suraj A Nandrekar and Narayan Pissurlekar were tied with 93 votes and Gaonkar resorted to a draw of lots to break the deadlock. Nandrekar emerged lucky and was declared elected to fill the final (tenth) position on the executive
committee.
Other unsuccessful candidates who vied for a berth in the Executive Committee polled votes as follows: Narayan Pissurlekar (93 votes) was eliminated by draw of lots, Tukaram Govekar (75 votes), Jai U Naik (69 votes), Krantiraj Samrat (67 votes), Babasaheb Deshmane (57 votes)
Gaonkar thanked members who assisted him with the election process including Ajay Lad, Nigam Dhavalikar and Atish Naik besides the outgoing executive committee which conducted the AGM and provided the logistics for the election.
