And he missed no opportunity in targeting the main beneficiary of their split. “You (Ravi Naik) would have not won this time had we not severed ties with the MGP. This is our constituency,” Parrikar said to Ponda’s Congress MLA and former chief minister, Ravi Naik.
The event to inaugurate the beautification work at the Kranti Maidan turned out to be a rare public slugfest between the BJP, Congress and MGP leaders. “As we (MGP and BJP) fought before the elections, you (Ravi Naik) won, otherwise you would have not won,” claimed CM.
Parrikar was responding to Naik’s earlier speech, which was aimed at the chief minister, about the need to distribute funds to all constituencies without discrimination.
“It is public money and hence, all constituencies should get equal funds.” Naik had said.
Taking a dig at Parrikar, Naik had also said: “I think Parrikar forgot to acquire land (for Kranti Maidan) which is in the possession of the armed forces, when he was defence minister. At least, he can now try for this since he is chief minister and his party is ruling at the centre.”
Parrikar, who was the last speaker at the function, had the final say in the matter.
“Naik’s advice (on avoiding discrimination) is good, but he failed to set an example when he had the chance. But I have not discriminated while undertaking works in constituencies of opposition MLAs,” Parrikar hit back.
