Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco on Saturday demanded that the  government go in appeal against the order of the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal  by preparing a foolproof case based on scientific study to protect the  interest of Goa.

Addressing the media, Reginaldo said that Chief  Minister Manohar Parrikar had sacrificed Goa’s interest for political  gains for the party as confirmed by the fact that BJP Karnataka leader B  S Yeddyurappa was the first one to welcome the decision. “The most  disturbing sign for Goa from Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal is allotting  diversion to Karnataka of 2.18 TMC feet for the Bhandura dam and 1.72  TMC feet for the Kalsa dam. The other harmful points of the verdict are  the allotment of 8.02 TMC feet of water to Karnataka for the Mahadayi  Hydroelectric project. It has resulted in 40 per cent of Karnataka’s  demand for 36.55 TMC water being satisfied, while Goa has been satisfied  with only 20 per cent of its demand of 122 TMC feet,” Reginaldo told  the media.

Terming as utter failure on the part of Goa to decisively  place the data on the consumption of the Mhadei river basin water, the  Congress MLA said no effort was done by Goa to contest Karnataka’s claim  that State’s existing usage of water was only 9.395 TMC feet. He  further claimed that the government committed a fiasco by not presenting  scientific studies showing how climate change and global warming will  have detrimental effect on the Mhadei basin’s water resources.
