PORVORIM: The Reis Magos village Panchayat has decided to segregate dry and
wet garbage separately and send it to the garbage treatment plant at Saligao from October 1.
Reis Magos Sarpanch Sheilesh Parulekar said about 800 kgs to 1 tonne of garbage is being generated every day in the panchayat area.
"The panchayat is collecting garbage on door-to-door basis daily through the contractor appointed for the purpose and deliver it to Saligao treatment plant. The panchayat pays the sum of Rs 10 lakh per year to the contractor for rendering the service," informed Parulekar.
"The officials at Saligao treatment plant have advised us to send wet and dry garbage separately from October 1, failing which it will not be accepted."
"Hence, the panchayat has decided to segregate the garbage at the composting pits shed set up at Ambhekhand and then dispatch it to Saligao garbage treatment plant," said Parulekar.
Panch Kedar Naik said the panchayat has taken all the necessary steps to clean the panchayat area clean, but they do not get enough support from the people.
"Apart from collecting garbage on door-to-door basis, the panchayat has kept the dust bins in every ward for dumping the garbage. Inspite of this, people while proceeding for work on two wheelers or in cars drop the garbage by the side of the road and proceed," said Naik.
"Hence, cooperation of the residents is also important for keeping the area clean. The panchayat has decided to purchase additional 120 big dust bins to keep in wards and also about 7,000 small garbage bins for distributing to 3,500 households."
"Each household will be given two garbage bins each for keeping wet and dry garbage separately," Naik further informed.
