Dry grass fires seemed to have not only kept the fire personnel on their toes, but have also caused loss in terms of water wastage, carbon pollution and fuel loss.
In fact, even as the Margao fire brigade was called to attend to three dry grass fires on Tuesday, Margao Fire Officer Gill D’Souza made a fervent plea to the people not to set fire to dry grass.
He said that fires set by individuals to dry grass often turn uncontrollable, prompting them to call the fire brigade. “This results in a big loss in terms of time, manpower, energy, fuel loss, pollution, besides water. Hence, people should think twice before setting grass on fire,” he said.
Besides, he said the person setting the grass on fire runs the risk of being booked for endangering life and property.
In the Raia case, Gill pointed out that the Margao fire brigade was called to douse the fire for the third time in as many days. This only goes to show that someone is deliberately setting fire to the grass, he said.
