A day after the Ammonia leakage at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, the Cuncolim police has registered a case against the Marine Export Factory for allegedly committing a negligent act endangering human life.
The Cuncolim police have acted in the matter based on a report from the Inspector of Factories and Boilers, which stated that there was release of the ammonia gas in the surrounding when a worker lifted the end of the purging pipeline inside a water container while emptying residual gas.
During the course of investigation, however, the report stated that the level of the ammonia gas was found within the permissible limit upon checking on the interface of the ammonia detectors.
The report from the Inspector of Factories and Boilers has shed light on the ammonia gas leakage at the Marine Export factory at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate. “It was observed that during the process of the purging of the ammonia pipeline at the premises of the factory, wherein the residual gas was emptied in the container containing water, at the time around 4.15pm, a worker lifted the end of the purging pipeline inserted inside the water container, which resulted in the release of the ammonia gas in the surrounding. During the course of the examination, the level of the ammonia gas was found within the permissible limit upon checking on the interface of the ammonia detectors.”
The report further stated that no injuries were recorded during the incident, adding that further investigation of the incident is in progress.
The Cuncolim police have registered an offence against the management of the unit under Section 336 and 284 of the IPC for allegedly endangering human life through negligent acts.
In his complaint, Cuncolim PSI Mahesh Naik stated that around 4.15 pm on Friday, the unit allegedly committed a negligent act endangering human life wherein they failed to take precautionary/safety measures while handling poisonous ammonia gas in their possession wherein in the process of purging ammonia gas pipeline and emptying residual ammonia gas in the water container.
The complaint further stated that at that time, the worker of the unit negligently lifted the end of purging pipeline which was inserted inside the water container thereby resulting in the release of ammonia gas in the air, causing danger to human life from inhalation of poisonous ammonia gas.
