Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) national president and MLA Viresh Borkar, an alliance partner of the Congress, made his presence felt on the dais at the Congress meeting at the Margao Cricket Club ground, even as senior Congress leaders said the party would engage with other opposition parties, including the Goa Forward Party (GFP), to forge an alliance to fight the 2027 Assembly elections together.

Borkar presented Rahul Gandhi with a flower bouquet, signalling that the regional outfit is gearing up to fight the upcoming polls alongside the Congress.

When the media later asked senior Congress working president M K Sheikh about the status of alliance talks with the Goa Forward Party, he said the two parties would soon resume discussions.

“The Goa Forward Party has taken a decision to lift the suspension of alliance talks with the Congress. This is a positive development on the alliance front. Since the Congress has kept its doors and windows open for talks with like-minded political parties, we hope the two parties will soon engage in discussions on the question of an alliance,” he said.

Incidentally, Sheikh, along with South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes, had been tasked by the Congress leadership with meeting Goa Forward chief Vijai Sardesai at Goemkar Ghor to discuss an alliance. However, relations between the two parties hit rock bottom after the Goa Forward Party joined hands with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to form the Goa First alliance.

The regional party has since distanced itself from the Goa First alliance and called on all like-minded opposition parties, including the Congress, to come together to fight the 2027 Assembly elections.
