Sao Jose de Areal villagers have lodged their objection to the land acquisition for doubling of the existing South Western Railway track passing through the village, even as railway officials played truant as they failed to turn up for an interaction with the villagers at the station on Friday morning.
The villagers from Ralloi assembled at the Sao Jose de Areal railway station upon given to understand that officials of the Railway Nigam Ltd will come for an interaction with the affected parties.
Th
ey contended that though the railways want to acquire land admeasuring 265 sq mts, many people, whose houses are located 500 metres from the railway tracks have received consent letter from the revenue officials to give their land for
the project.
The villagers pointed out that if the doubling of the railway track takes place, houses located very close to the tracks may be affected by vibration, resulting in
the destruction of their ancestral houses.
Moreover, villagers contended that the railways have not explained on the number of footbridges and crossings to facilitate the people
to cross.
Village Sarpanch Perry D'Costa informed that the railway officials had promised to interact with the villagers on Friday, but lamented that the officials have sent a last minute communique about their inability to make it for the meeting.
One of the villagers pointed out that he had to come down to his village from Mumbai due to the scheduled meeting with the railway officials, saying he would have to return home without meeting them.
Villagers have demanded to know how come the revenue officials distributed the consent letter to part with their land when the railways maintained that they will acquired only a small portion of the land.
A local villager Ubaldo said that the villagers have decided not to sign any letter unless and until the railway and other officials descend in the village and explain about the land
acquisition.

Curtorim ZP member Moreno Rebello said he would stand by the people of Sao Jose de Areal in their fight against land acquisition, while expressing his support to the agitated villagers.
