In yet another distressing turn of events, the State witnessed two harrowing road accidents, resulting in loss of life and injuries.

The incidents, occurring in Guirim and on the perilous Siolim-Marna slope, have reignited concerns over road safety measures and infrastructure.

The first mishap unfolded in Guirim, as a truck travelling from Tivim to Panaji along the NH66 veered out of control upon reaching the Guirim flyover. The vehicle collided with barricades before hurtling off the flyover, plummeting onto the service road below.

The impact of the crash claimed the life of one individual instantly, while two others sustained injuries, necessitating immediate medical attention. Prompt responses from Mapusa fire and police personnel ensued, with efforts focused on rescue operations and assessing the aftermath.

The tragic incident unfolded during the early hours at approximately 5 am.

Later in the evening the police arrested the truck driver for rash driving.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a loaded tempo-truck en route to Siolim opted for the shortcut via Mapusa Housing Board. However, upon reaching the treacherous incline at Siolim-Marna, the driver grappled with loss of control, leading to a collision with a compound wall.

The force of impact left the driver critically injured, necessitating urgent medical care, while two other occupants suffered minor injuries.

Locals recount the distressing event occurring around 11 am, further underscoring the urgency for addressing safety concerns along this route.

William Fernandes, a concerned member of the Siolim-Marna panchayat, reiterated longstanding pleas to authorities regarding the urgent need for road widening and enhanced safety measures along the perilous stretch.

“This road has unfortunately become synonymous with tragedy, marked by frequent mishaps,” Fernandes lamented, emphasising the imperative for authorities to implement stringent measures to mitigate risks, including restricting loaded vehicles from traversing this hazardous route.

As communities grapple with the aftermath of these tragic incidents, calls for decisive action to bolster road safety measures resonate louder than ever, underscoring the imperative of proactive measures to prevent further tragedies on the State’s highways.
