Acting tough against labs disposing biomedical waste, the Margao Municipal Council on Thursday imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 for the act of handing of biomedical waste mixed with other solid waste.
The lab has been told to deposit the penalty amount within 24 hours while being told to appear before the Chief Officer on October 8.
Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has warned that failure to appear and submit an undertaking would invite sealing of the premises under the provisions of the laws in force.
The Chief Officer also threatened to file a case without further notice.
The action comes after a Municipal supervisor drafted for door to door waste collection informed the office that the unit has been handing over un-segregated waste mixed with biomedical waste.
During inspection, the civic body found that biomedical waste from the unit was mixed with the solid waste and handed over to the Municipal waste collector.
'By your act of handing over the biomedical waste mixed with solid waste has created problems for the Municipal body in the safe disposal of Municipal waste and prohibited under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, the Biomedical Waste Management Rules 2016 and the Goa Non Biodegradable Garbage Control Act 1998', the notice stated.
The notice further stated the the business activity was being conducted by the unit without valid trade and occupation license thereby violating the Trade and Occupation by-laws 1989 of the Municipal Council.
