When metal crash-barriers got damaged after mishaps at an accident-prone stretch of the Karmalghat, authorities turned to sticks as the next best safeguard.
Believe it or not, authorities have hit upon an unusual solution by erecting sticks to safeguard the vehicles from going off the road on the dangerous curve at Karmalghat.
Crash-barriers have been installed along the dangerous stretch of the Karmalghat, but with many mishaps at the site, the crash-barriers have been damaged and mangled by vehicles ramming into the roadside rails.
As a temporary solution, authorities have now erected sticks with the confidence that these barriers will prevent vehicles from falling off the road.
Recently, Canacona MLA and Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, who regularly uses the same route twice a day, had inspected the dangerous curve along with PWD and other officials.
Tawadkar had reportedly announced short-term/temporary measures to curb accidents at Karmalghat by proposing road-widening and erecting proper safety walls within the next 6 months and stating that a permanent solution would take 2-3 years.
Meanwhile, the Karmalghat section was once again in the news as traffic was disrupted from Tuesday evening till late night, following an accident between two vehicles on the Padi side of the Karmalghat slope.
Only small cars and two-wheelers could pass by from 6.30 pm to 10 pm, while heavy vehicles were held up.
Cuncolim Police managed to restore traffic movement after 10 pm, after when the two vehicles involved in the mishap were removed from the site.
