Asserting that dredging will have an effect on clams and shrimps and the chance of their revival will be less if the entire breeding area is dredged, the Assolna Bio-diversity Management Committee has urged the Captain of Ports to carry out a mitigation study or an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) on dredging.
The Committee has also demanded to consult the stakeholders as the river has been their livelihood.
The committee headed by Fredrick Borges has resolved to ask the Captain of Ports to immediately stop the project and submit relevant documents, including the EIA report on dredging; year-wise time series analysis of Sal River from 1961 to 2020 that indicates that the depth of the river has reduced by three meters uniformly.
The committee has also asked for the consent letter from the Captain of Ports to the Government of India permitting river Sal to be declared as a national waterway along with annexure containing names and addresses of Sal river fishing communities consulted and consented on the issue.
