The Salcete Taluka Level Coastal Monitoring Committee on Tuesday conducted an inspection of a site at Paroda following a complaint that an illegal construction has come up on the banks of river Kushavati in the village.

After the inspection, the committee is expected to submit a report to the deputy Collector, Margao for further action.

Chairman of Paroda Bio-diversity Management Committee Gabriel Fernandes told the media that a complaint was lodged against the illegal construction and land filling based on a resolution adopted at the village gram sabha.

He pointed out that the Committee should take a call on the legality of the issue given that the site in question is prone to floods during monsoons. “The Panchayat had issued a show cause notice on the party to stop the work. However, the party has not replied nor has given any explanation”, he said.

Environmental activist, Dr Jorson Fernandes said the site in question appears prone to flooding, adding that it is incumbent on the Water Resources Department to conduct a study of water dynamics on the flow of water to prevent flooding and inundation.

He further said the concerned departments should conduct a study to ascertain whether the activity will lead to flooding.

Meanwhile, the concerned party has told the media that he is setting up a futsal ground for the benefit of the local youth. Saying that Paroda was once famous for footballers and tiatrists,  the  said his aim is to revive football in the village by setting up the futsal ground.
