Saxtti MLAs on Tuesday strongly batted for the proposed Education hub at Davorlim on the lines of the Integrated educational complex at Cujira to overcome the acute traffic congestion in the commercial capital and to provide better school amenities for the students.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and his Navelim counterpart Ulhas Tuemkar made a strong pitch for the early setting up of the Integrated school complex at Davorlim, on the outskirts of Margao,, where the government has acquired land admeasuring 1.20 lakh square metres over a decade ago.
The duo took the platform of the foundation stone laying programme of the Umabai Krishna Karwarkar Educational Complex at Raia on Tuesday, which will house the Popular Dnyan Prabodhini school.
Pointing out that one of the oldest school from Margao had to come to Raia since the proposed education hub at Davorlim could not see light of the day in the last 10 years, the Fatorda MLA hoped the government set up the educational hub within the next three year before the end of the current Assembly term.
“A modern school complex on the outskirts of Margao is the need of the hour to ease traffic congestion in Margao. One way to address the acute traffic congestion in Margao is to shift the city-based schools to the proposed Education hub at Davorlim. Former Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar had drawn up plans to shift the Margao schools to Davorlim, but the plan could not take off after his sudden demise”, Sardesai said, adding that the Popular school would not have come to Raia had the education hub seen light of the day till date.
In his address, Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuemkar, in whose constituency Davorlim village is located, said he had a meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant only recently to discuss the develop the acquired land at Davorlim into the proposed education hub.
In fact, Tuemkar informed that the Chief Minister has assured that the process to allot the plots to the educational institutions will start in the next four months.
“The proposed education hub is falling in Navelim constituency represented by me in the Assembly. I have had discussions with the Chief Minister over the question of developing the acquired land into the education hub”, he said, adding that the government has drawn up plans to set up the educational complex at Davorlim on the lines of Cujira education complex.
In his address, president of Popular Dnyan Prabodhini Avdhoot Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar said the need for a spacious school was felt given the huge demand for admissions at the Popular school.
“The need for new infrastructure was felt because of the huge response for admissions, We tried out best to get land from the Zambaulim Temple, but it fizzled out before the school decided to set up the school at Raia”, he said.
Underscoring the need to impart values and culture for the students at the pre and pre-primary level, Parrikar said the new school complex is estimated to cost around Rs seven crore adding that the project would be completed in phases.
