Sarpanch Girish Pillai and six of the 11 members of Sancoale panchayat moved a no-confidence motion against Deputy Sarpanch Nandini Desai on Thursday, after accusing her executing works without taking panchas into confidence.

Besides Pillai, Kavita Kamal, Arish Kabar, Narayan Naik, Govind Lamani, Satish Padwalkar and Succorina Vales were the other signatories to the motion, which was submitted to the Mormugao BDO on Thursday.

Sources said the entire panel belonged to BJP leader and Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha and there was resentment among panch members after Desai, who was elected from Ward 1, is alleged to have claimed that she was not bothered about the sarpanch or the panchayat for taking up works, a claim which has been refuted by Nandini Desai.

When contacted, Mormugao BDO Deepak Vaigankar said he had received the no-confidence motion letter and a meeting would be convened within 15 days as per procedure.

Speaking to reporters, Panch Govind Lamani accused Desai of skipping important meetings.

“When we were elected, we had decided to remain united and take up good development works. Whenever there were discussions on important issues at meetings, she would not come and would take up works without taking us into confidence.” Lamani commented on the issue

“She had recently started acting as an individual decision maker and was taking up work on her own, which is not a good sign for the unity. If there is no unity, there will be no development. We also heard from some people that she had said she does not care for the sarpanch or panchayat,” added Lamani to press persons present.

Charges baseless, would have voluntarily resigned: Desai

VASCO: Rejecting allegations levelled against her as totally baseless, Sancoale Deputy Sarpanch Nandini Desai said she was completely unaware of the no-confidence motion against her.

“The allegations are baseless and if all panch members had to tell me to resign as deputy sarpanch, I would have done so voluntarily,” Desai told reporters.

“I don’t think a designation brings glory to a person and it is the hard work done that is more important. I will continue to work for my ward.”

“I however respect their decision and I want to say all of us panch members shall always be united as before,” Desai said.
