Serving as sarpanch has become a habit for Ramakant Borkar and he was on Friday elected sarpanch of Sancoale for the seventh time.
Borkar was elected unopposed at a special meeting at the panchayat office.
Sources in the panchayat said the Sancoale Panchayat had been without a sarpanch for almost two months after elections to the new sarpanch had been delayed.
“Elections were to be held a few days ago, but a panch member tested positive for Covid, causing further delay. Dy Sarpanch Kavita Kamal was handling the panchayat affairs during this time and elections were finally conducted on Friday.”
Borkar later told reporters that he would stress on development works in the village.
"The people of Sancoale village and all panchayat members have faith in me and my work. I will take up development works initiated by former sarpanch Girish Pillai, especially the Panchayat Ghar, which will be given top priority.”
“I will discuss with Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho and get the new Panchayat Ghar completed as soon as possible and we will also take up works on the garbage treatment plant.”
“We will also provide all necessary and basic infrastructure like better roads, etc.," said Borkar.
Former Sarpanch Girish Pillai said all panch members would be united in taking up development projects in the village.
"We have finally got the land allotted for a new Panchayat Ghar this long-pending project will finally take shape," said Pillai.
Dy Sarpanch resigns
While a new Sarpanch was elected to Sancoale Panchayat on Friday, it was also a day when a no-confidence motion was moved against Deputy Sarpanch Kavita Kamal.
While Ramakant Borkar was elected unopposed, seven of the 11 members in Sancoale Panchayat later moved a no-confidence motion against Kamal.
Shortly after being serviced with a no-confidence motion, Kamal tendered her resignation as deputy sarpanch to the BDO office in Vasco.
The motion was moved by Panch members Girish Pillai, Govind Lamani, Arish Kadar , Ramakant Borkar, Sunita Borkar, Succorina Vales and Nandini Desai.
The seven panch members alleged that Kamal had not been taking Panch members into confidence while taking decisions and had failed to act against illegal construction in the panchayat jurisdiction.
