A large number of people witnessed floats depicting mythological figures and current issues at the annual Sangodutsav in the Cumbharjua river on the seventh day of Ganesh Chaturthi on Thursday.
Minister for Art and Culture Govind Gawade, Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar, Mahima Desai, Sunil Naik, Nishita Gawade, Surendra Naik, Prashant Bhandari and others were present on the occasion.
The annual Sangodutsav is being organised in Cumbharjua canal on the seventh day of Ganesh Chaturthi.
Subsequent to the Sangod (two canoes tied together and decorated) making five rounds in the Cumbharjua canal, the Ganesh idol worshipped at Shantadurga Kumbharjuvekarin Temple is immersed in the waters. The villagers who worship Ganesh for seven days at their residences also immerse Ganesh idols here.
According to the villagers, century ago, a family known as Vadiye from Cumbharjua due to some unavoidable reasons had kept their Ganesh idol at Shantadurga Kumbharjuvekarin temple and left the village. Hence, the villagers decided to worship the Ganesh idol at the temple for seven days and the practise is still continued.
To mark the Sangod, the idol worshipped at Shantadurga Kumbharjuvekarin Temple at Marcel is carried out in a procession to the Cumbharjua canal. The idol is then placed in the Sangod and accompanied by devotees the Sangod makes five rounds in the canal from Cumbharjua bridge to Tariwada-Marcel wharf. After the fifth round, the idol is immersed in the waters with great fervour.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Govind Gawade assured to give all the help from the government for Sangodutsav. "It is best that this tradition is continuing since last many years. We have to take it ahead and this government will always support it," Gawade assured.
