Sanjana Velip set to be elected unopposed as South ZP chief

Guirdolim ZP member Sanjana Velip is all set to be elected unopposed as the next Chairperson of the South Goa Zilla Panchayat.

For, the Presiding Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar has received the lone nomination paper from Sanjana for the vacant post on Friday. The opposition, including the INDI Alliance preferred not to field a candidature for the vacant post. Election for the ZP chairperson’s post is scheduled on September 2.

Sanjana’s candidature was cleared by the BJP leadership on Friday morning just an hour before the nomination process could start at the office of the South Goa Zilla panchayat.

Ending days of suspense in the BJP camp over the candidature for the hot seat, the name of Sanjana was cleared for the top post at a meeting of the party-backed ZP members with party leaders former MP Vinay Tendulkar and former MLA Damu Naik.

The duo went into a huddle with the BJP ZP members at the party district office here on Friday morning before they announced Sanjana’s candidature. The ZP members later accompanied Sanjana to the office of the Zilla Panchayat to file her nomination papers.

Election for the post of South Goa ZP chairperson has been necessitated following the resignation by outgoing Chairperson Suvarna Tendulkar after a diktat from the party leadership.

Incidentally, BJP ZP members pointed out that the choice of the new chairperson has been decided by the party leadership and were informed of Sanjana’s candidature just an hour before the nomination process could kick-start.

Sanjana later told the media that she would continue the work carried out by outgoing Chairperson Suvarna Tendulkar by taking all the members into confidence. She said that development proposals made by the members would be accorded priority for their implementation.
