Sanvordem incident lesson for govt: Vijai

Vijai says what has happened at Sanvordem was an unfortunate incident and a lesson or two for the government to dismantle decommissioned bridges

TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai on Friday said the Sanvordem footbridge collapse incident is a lesson for the government authorities to dismantle decommissioned bridges, but still standing tall.
“The Sanvordem incident is a lesson for the government. At the same time, the public should be alert that bridges that have been barricaded and not in use pose a danger to human lives,” Sardesai told the media after visiting Hospicio hospital to inquire with the condition of the injured in Thursday’s tragic incident at Sanvordem.
He said what has happened at Sanvordem was an unfortunate incident and a lesson or two for the government to dismantle decommissioned bridges. He admitted that the old Borim bridge, a portion of which collapsed recently, is one such bridge which ought to have been demolished, should be dismantled immediately.   
Accompanied by Orthopedic surgeon, Dr Sunny Kamat and others doctors, the TCP Minister went round the Male surgery ward where the injured have been undergoing treatment since Thursday evening.   
When asked to shed light on the pattern of assistance that would be provided to the injured victims, Sardesai said the government will not leave no stone unturned to assist the victims.

Over a decade later, Khareband stop gap steel bridge still not dismantled

Will the district Collector, South or the PWD explain to Madgavkars why the temporary steel bridge erected by the authorities more than a decade ago as a pure stop gap arrangement over River Sal at Khareband not dismantled till date? Is the steel bridge safe for plying of heavy vehicles and for pedestrians in the absence of side guards stolen by unscrupulous elements?
