PANAJI: After almost two months of summer vacation, lakhs of students across the state are set to get back to the grind from today (Thursday), even as rumours floated around on Wednesday about whether the date of commencement would be postponed to Monday.
However, Director of Education Nagaraj Honnekeri put the rumours to rest explaining that schools needed to have a certain number of instructional days in a year, so will to re-open as scheduled.
Queries were raised by parents about the back-to-school date since there has been a longer-than-expected delay in arrival of the monsoons this year, as well as the high temperatures that have been affecting people in rural Goa.
Over the years, an average of almost 1,00,000 students study across primary sections in the state, with around a quarter of a lakh enrolling for Std 1. Last year's statistics show that around 71,000 enrolled for middle school across the state, with another 71,000 enrolling for high school and around 36,000 enrolled for higher secondary school.
Meanwhile, Honnekeri told "The Goan" that distribution of textbooks for students up to Class VII was in process and would be complete by Monday.
