Though the revolt does not find a mention in the history books, it will be studied for inclusion in curriculum in the future

MARGAO: The historic 1967 Opinion Poll, besides the history of Goa Legislative Assembly and the events culminating into Goa attaining Statehood may finally become part of the school syllabus in the next academic year 2019-20 if instructional matter compiled on these three historic movements gets the nod of the Academic Council.
For, the panel comprising of historians and experts headed by Prof Harsha Kamat, which was assigned the job of carrying out a detailed study into these historic events have submitted the instructional matter to the Chairman of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher secondary education, Ramkrishna Samant.
Sadly, sources said the historic 1585 Cuncolim revolt, besides the history of four other historic events, does not form instructional matter prepared by the Panel.
The Goa Board Chairman pointed out that it was felt there was no need to prepare instructional matter as far as the four historic events, including the Pinto revolt, history of Goa’s freedom struggle, History of the Liberation of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Operation Vijai since these events already find a mention in the school textbooks. He, however, admitted that the 1585 Cuncolim revolt does not find a mention in the history books, while pointing out that the history of the revolt will be studied for inclusion in curriculum in the future.
The Goa Board Chairman told The Goan that since the instructional matter in respect of the historic Opinion Poll, history of Goa Legislative Assembly and the history of Goa attaining Statehood, the same will be placed before the Academic Council for discussion and approval. “The Academic Council may have a meeting in April which will deliberate on the inclusion of these three historic events in the text books at the SSC level,” Samant said.
To a question, the Goa Board Chairman said these three historic events may form part of the school curriculum from the coming academic year adding that once the instructional matter receives the Council nod and necessary instructions goes out to introduce the chapter in the history books.
Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, while presiding at the golden jubilee celebrations of Goa’s Opinion Poll in January last at the Ravindra bhavan, had promised to get the history of Opinion Poll in the school history books in the 2019-20 academic year. Soon, the expert panel headed by Prof Harsha Kamat was constituted to conduct a study on eight historic events, including the history of Goa’s freedom struggle, the historic Cuncolim revolt against the Portuguese regime in 1585, which Cuncolkars term as the First War of Independence against colonial powers in India; the Pinto revolt of the 18th century; history of the liberation of Dadra and Nagar Haveli; the Operation Vijai which was launched by India to liberate Goa from the Portuguese colonial power; besides the History of Goa Legislative Assembly; the 1967 Opinion Poll movement and state’s post-liberation history culminating with Goa attaining statehood.
Of these eight historic events, people of Cuncolim had been long demanding the inclusion of the 1585 Cuncolim Revolt in the history books over years, with the demand even echoing in Parliament when it was raised by then Rajya Sabha MP late Shantaram Naik.
